Our Awhina Team is here to help the people we support and their families in many ways. We can check with people how well their Carer Support is working and find out if they need Covid or flood recovery assistance.

Recently, one team member shared how flexible Carer Support helped Praneeta and her 12-year-old son, Ishaan. Ishaan sometimes struggles to control his behaviour and would lash out at his siblings and peers. But since taking guitar lessons, he's become calmer and more focused. Praneeta uses Carer Support to pay for the lessons and is happy to see him excited about learning music. Mum is also able to take a 30-minute break and enjoy a cuppa on her own while Ishaan takes his lessons.

Praneeta expressed her gratitude, saying, "I'm thankful that you listened to me when we first talked about my needs, and you explained how to use Carer Support funding in a way that works for me and Ishaan. I felt supported throughout the process."

Taking the time to listen to disabled people and their loved ones and explaining available support options can make a significant difference in people’s lives. By providing customised support plans and promoting independence, we are committed to help people feel empowered and supported in achieving their goals.
