Dan's story: I'm fully vaccinated to protect my family and my community

“I’m fully vaccinated against COVID-19 not just for myself, but mostly for my family.”

Dan is Samoan, plays a mean keyboard and jokes that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is his long-lost twin brother. Dan also lives with a disability and is our Project Advisor working alongside many tagata sa’ili malo/Pacific disabled people, their aiga, community leaders and providers.

“My job means I go out and meet a lot of people, so there’s a risk of being exposed to COVID-19. The thought of passing the virus to older and vulnerable family members does not sit well with me. But I know that being vaccinated means I’m less likely to transmit the virus to loved ones.”

We fully support the Government’s initiative to vaccinate 90% of eligible New Zealanders. Current data shows that 43% of disability service users and 39% of Pacifica people in Auckland aged 16+ are fully vaccinated. We think our community can do better than this. That’s why we created Tiaki to work alongside regional and local vaccination efforts to bring disabled people and their aiga closer to the vaccine.

“This is how I’m contributing to my community. I’m helping to make traveling and gathering with friends and family safe again. I’m doing my bit to protect the people you care for too.”

"I’d like our Pacific community to listen to and have a talanoa with experts who have dedicated their lives studying the safety of vaccines. Please talk to a trusted family doctor about the benefits of getting the vaccine.”

If you have a disability and live in Auckland, we can support you to access the vaccine. Call us on 0800 824 5872.
