Hanna and her daughters: Supporting flood affected whānau

Hana and her two young daughters were hit hard by the floods that damaged their rental home. The family lost many of their belongings and the girls' bedroom was destroyed, leaving them all sleeping in Hana's room. They have no insurance to replace their things.
In addition, Hana shared that her five-year-old daughter Rangimarie has been finding it challening to transition to school. Rangimarie has autism/takiwātanga and the school is currently not equipped to provide support for her, so Rangimarie can only attend for a few hours each day. Hana is working half-days at the moment to support Rangimarie.
Hana had used her Carer Support funding to buy items for Rangimarie that enabled self-directed entertainment, and had exhausted her funding.
Thankfully, our Whānau Ora team was able to step in and provide other support. Through our partnerships with a wide range of programmes and resources designed to support disabled people and their whānau experiencing hardship, we helped the family access funding for some bedroom furniture, beddings and clothing vouchers.
Additionally, Hana's support facilitator has offered to assist her in advocating for school support and they have arranged a meeting with the school.
Our goal is to provide holistic support to people, so they can achieve everyday life outcomes. We are grateful for the opportunity to provide awhina to disabled people/tāngata whaikaha Māori and whānau during this difficult time.
