Choices in Community Living

Published 11 September 2022

Choice in Community Living is a service funded by Whaikaha Ministry of Disabled People. It is currently only available in Auckland, Waikato, The Hutt, Otago and Southland regions.

It provides the disabled person, who might otherwise require high-level of care usually managed through a residential service, the flexibility to plan for and live more independently in a home of their choice by way of a personalised budget.

This service offers the disabled person the flexibility to design how their support needs are met to achieve their outcomes and aspirations. It’s aimed at providing the disabled person the opportunities to improve or enhance their skills and capabilities to support their independence and participation both at home and in their community.

This service can be discussed with the local needs assessment agency. If eligible, a Provider of choice will then work alongside the disabled Person and/or their family with the set up and ongoing management of this service. If required, this also includes the recruitment, training and ongoing support of carers as well as the sustainability of the relationship between the disabled person and their care network.
